Artist Notes:
Emogene is a modest, down-to-earth woman --- notice the lack of jewelry and simple attire in her portrait. She has long been a source of spiritual strength for her family and friends, and this portrait captures her reading a passage from her Bible.

I am fascinated by how much personality and character are revealed in a person's hands and in their position. In this portrait you get a sense of wisdom and understanding
flowing from the Bible into Emogene's worn and wrinkled hand as she lovingly caresses the pages of an old friend. When possible I like to include personal elements in a portrait, such as Emogene's Bible, that compliment the characteristics and qualities of the subject.

I especially enjoyed painting the richly colored scarf Emogene wore which is complimented by her red shirt. Her scarf is an especially important element as it adds vibrancy and color that are missing from other areas of the painting. To me the scarf completes the portrait and really illustrates how critical the overall composition and supporting elements are in a painting. All good portraits start with good composition!
