Having a portrait painted is a special event in one's life. I use the finest oil paints and materials to create highly detailed, realistic portraits that capture the essence and personality of each subject. The portrait painting process begins with an initial consultation with the client to determine basic design elements for the portrait.

The next step involves a photo session in which I photograph the client in a variety of poses. This may be done either indoors using studio lighting or outdoors using natural lighting. Professional equipment and lighting are used, and clients are able to review the digital images immediately after shooting. Portrait elements that I consider include setting, composition, mood, clothing, lighting effects and the formality of the portrait, as well as the size of the painting and where in the home or office it will be placed. Normally, about one hour is required to photograph the subject and can be done on location. The client and I will then select the photos and background from which the portrait will be based. Note that I prefer not painting directly from a reference photograph as explained in my "Why Paint" article.

Portraits typically take 2-3 months to complete, depending on size and complexity. My current waiting list before beginning a new portrait is approximately 5-6 months. Delivery will be arranged upon completion.
